- OVERVIEW
-
- DOS requires that all hard disks (including SyQuest removable cartridge disk
- drives) be partitioned. DOS hard disks may be partitioned into a single
- partition that includes the whole disk or into multiple partitions. OS/2
- requires that removable media not be partitioned, i.e. be formatted like a
- "floppy diskette"
-
- SyQuest OS/2 Removability Software allows you to dynamically interchange
- partitioned FAT (File Allocation Table) cartridges between DOS and OS/2.
- The latest level SyQuest DOS Software supports the interchange of non-
- partitioned cartridges ("OS/2 floppy cartridges") between OS/2 and DOS.
-
- Since OS/2 assigns drive letters to ALL primary partitions before logical
- partitions, removability support will NOT work when OS/2 is booted from
- a logical partition. (OS/2 dynamically changes the drive letter of the
- boot partition when it attempts to load a primary partition on a SyQuest or
- any removable drive and fails). ALWAYS BOOT OS/2 FROM THE PRIMARY PARTITION
- OF YOUR HARD DRIVE (Hard Disk 0) WHEN USING SyQUEST REMOVABILITY SOFTWARE.
- When using standard OS/2 software ("OS/2 floppy") support, you are able
- to boot OS/2 from logical drives since OS/2 assigns removable media drives
- after all primary and logical hard drives.
-
- INSTALLATION
-
- SyQuest Removability Software consists of two files, OS2DASD.DMD and
- SYQLOCK.FLT.
-
- To manually install the software:
-
- 1. Copy OS2DASD.DMD to the root directory. If you are copying the file from
- a floppy diskette (A: drive) and OS/2 is booting from the C: drive, enter
-
- COPY A:OS2DASD.DMD C:\OS2DASD.DMD
-
- Note: The OS/2 2.1 installation program puts the shipped version of
- OS2DASD.DMD in the \OS2 directory. The OS/2 3 installation program puts
- the shipped version in the \OS2\BOOT subdirectory. OS2 will load the
- SyQuest modified version of OS2DASD.DMD first because it is located in
- the root directory. To uninstall the removability software delete or
- rename the OS2DASD.DMD file in the root directory.
-
- 2. COPY SYQLOCK.FLT to the /OS2 directory. If you are copying the file from
- a floppy diskette (A: drive) and OS/2 is booting from the C: drive, enter
-
- COPY A:SYQLOCK.FLT C:\OS2\SYQLOCK.FLT
-
- 3. Edit CONFIG.SYS. Insure that the following statements are included in the
- file.
-
- a. BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD
-
- Options supported by the SyQuest Version of OS2DASD.DMD include:
-
- /F Tells the Operating System to reserve a disk volume letter for
- OS/2 floppy support. If you have both partitioned and
- non-partitioned ("OS/2 floppy cartridges") you will need to
- use this option. The "OS/2 floppy cartridge" disk volume letter
- will be allocated after all partitioned disk volume letters
- are allocated.
-
- /NUMVOL:u,n
- Tells the Operating System to reserve "n" volume letters for
- drive "u" where n is an integer between 1 and 4 and u is
- physical hard disk index, (0 for boot drive, 1 for second drive,
- 2 for the third drive, etc.)
-
- b. BASEDEV=SYQLOCK.FLT /UNIT:0
-
- If you will be attaching two SyQuest SCSI drives to your SCSI adapter,
- you will need to change the "/UNIT:0" to "/UNIT:0,1". For three
- drives use "/UNIT:0,1,2"
-
- c. BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD or BASEDEV=AHA154X.ADD
-
- Use AHA152X.ADD for an Adaptec 1510, 1515 or 152X SCSI Adapter
- Use AHA154X.ADD for an Adpatec 154X Adapter
- Use the appropriate ADD for other SCSI Adapters.
-
- d. BASEDEV=EPSA.ADD (For SyQuest Parallel Port Kit Adapters Only)
-
-
- OPERATION
-
- After installing the SyQuest Removability Software and modifying CONFIG.SYS,
- the system must be rebooted. Drive letter assignment follows OS/2 conventions.
- All primary partitions are allocated drive letters, followed by logical
- partitions followed by non-partitioned drives (OS/2 floppy formatted
- removable media).
-
- Under OS/2 2.1, correctly installed SyQuest drives will be represented by
- a floppy diskette icon. Under OS/2 3, correctly installed drives will be
- represented by removable drive icon.
-
- Removing a SyQuest Cartridge - SyQuest drives are brought up in a "LOCKed"
- condition when OS/2 boots. Depressing the eject button on the drive has
- no effect until a software "UNLOCK" command is sent to the drive. To
- "UNLOCK" the drive, double click the "OS/2 System" icon to launch the
- "Drives - Icon View Window". Move the mouse cursor to the icon for the
- SyQuest drive and depress the right mouse button. Single click the
- "Unlock disk" menu item to a send a software "UNLOCK" command to the
- SyQuest drive. The drive will remain "UNLOCKed" until a software
- "UNLOCK" command is issued or until OS/2 accesses the drive. While in the
- "UNLOCKed" state, oyou may depress the "eject button" and remove the
- cartridge. After replacing one cartridge with another cartridge, move the
- mouse cursor to the icon representing the SyQuest drive and depress the
- right mouse button. Select the "Refresh now" menu item to have the
- WorkPlace Shell update the information about the files on the cartridge.
-
- Notes: OS/2 FDISK and FDISKPM do not support the partitioning of a
- cartridge that has previously been formatted as an "OS2 floppy".
- You will need to use SyQuest DOS software to remove all "OS/2
- floppy" partitions before you will be able to partition (FDISK)
- the cartridge under OS/2.
-
- Autolocking of cartridges is not supported by the SyQuest
- Parallel Port Adapter Kit. You will need to manually lock
- cartridges attached to this product.
-
- If your system hangs with the SyQuest Parallel Port Adapter Kit:
- a. Disconnect the parallel port cable and reboot your system
- b. Edit the CONFIG.SYS and append "/DE" to the EPSA.ADD statement,e.g.
- BASEDEV=EPSA.ADD /DE
- c. Reboot your system.
-
- Known Problems:
-
- 1. Compaq XL560 (with internal 535M SCSI drive). When loading
- AHA15XX.SYS or EPSA.SYS the drive letter of the boot partition
- is reassigned and the system traps.
